The WORX WG779 Cordless Battery lawn mower is becoming a very popular choice here in the US when looking for a greener alternative to a gas powered lawnmower , but just how good is it?

The WG779 is a relatively new kid on the block as is it uses two 20v  4.0AH batteries simultaneously as opposed to the one 40v. Why? well because WORX wanted to standardise batteries across their range of cordless yard tools.

This mower is indeed packed with features found in more higher end cordless mowers and certainly has the ability to cut a lawn up to 5,500 square feet on a single charge (roughly the size of a tennis court and a half).

Below I’ll be detailing all the features and functions of the WORX WG779, both good and not so good so you understand exactly what you’re getting for your money.

Power System

Like many cordless lawn mowers, the WORX WG779 is powered by two Lithium-ion battery (40V) and electrical motor which it will charge in around 4 hours. The batteries are removed from the mower for charging and storage.

WORX introduced the two 20v batteries in 2018 to enable compatibility with their other cordless power tools of which there are 40 in the range. The two WORX batteries can be charged at the same time and the WORX WG779 comes with an eco mode for lighter cuts, reducing the power and extending the cutting time.

The eco mode is really useful if your lawn has been cut recently and you don’t require the additional power to cut longer grass with the turbo mode, this eco setting does extend the mowing time considerably.

Another great feature of this mower is an easy to see battery gauge on the top of the mower; you would think this is standard with all cordless mower, however, it’s not. Well done WORX for including this!

As mentioned above the charge to cut ratio is good and is an aspect which beats its competition, but in saying that the mowing/charging time doesn’t directly affect you, after all the lawn will still be getting mowed!

Also the power system is completely electric so it produces zero emissions and works extremely quietly. Which is quieter? well there’s not much between them but would say the WORX is slightly quieter due to the “Mute technology” that WORX claim makes there mower barely audible from 10m.

The great thing about these mowers is that you can set out to work at any time you want without it annoying you, your family or your neighbours, and with zero emissions look after the environment as well.

 Blades

The WG779 is equipped with one 14″ wheeled metal mower blade that gives them two very effective benefits…

1. Metal blade generally wear less quickly than plastic blades which results in you needing to replace the lawnmower blades more often than a lawnmower that uses a metal blade.
2. Metal blades are generally sharper and provide a cleaner cut to the grass blade, resulting in a neater, tidier and superior finish to your lawn and yard. The metal blades on the WG779 can be sharpened when needed unlike plastic blades.

This again does not necessarily put it ahead of competitors but it’s good that WORX have taken advantage of what is clearly the most effective cutting system in the market.

Close to edge cutting

WORX have designed the deck to assist with cutting as close to the edge as possible to limit the amount of trimming required. The deck design enables the WG779. to cut grass close to fencing/walls, leaving a smaller uncut grass area around the edges. This is a definite advantage over the Flymo 300.

Height Adjustment

In order to combat the changing season and to continually improve the look of your lawn, you can adjust the height at which the WG779 cuts at. This is done very easily using the large lever located on front/side of the mower.

It lets you choose to cut from anywhere between 20mm to 70mm with 6 separate cutting lengths. Just make sure you don’t set it at the shortest setting from the start when the lawn has significant growth, instead start at a much higher setting and gradually work your way down. This gives the areas of small grass to catch up with the long, resulting in a more even lawn.

As well as being able to sharpen the blades, it is also possible to purchase a replacement blade. Replacing the blade is relatively easy for anyone with basic DIY skills and tools.

Cutting Diameter and Height

The cutting diameter of the mower may seem a little on the small size with only a 14 inch mowing capability. Now, compared to it’s counterparts with widths of up to 17″, this might be a potential disadvantage; however, it could also be beneficial if it’s to be used in a smaller areas and lawns with narrow strips.

When you need a mower that’s light in weight and going to get in the smaller areas of your lawn, this may well be the best option. Yes it will take longer to mow the entire area, but if it fits, and hey there’s no rush then the WG779 could be the cordless  mower of choice.

One thing the Flymo 300 does slightly better is the height adjustment. On the Flymo 300 there is a single lever on the top side of the mower with a large handle, this makes adjusting the height very smooth and easy. The height adjustment on the WG779 is smaller and located towards the front of the mower. Adjustment seems to be that bit more difficult with the WORX and not so nicely balanced as with the Flymo. This is no big deal as you are not constantly adjusting the height but worth a mention anyway.

Grass bag capacity

As with all smaller cordless lawn mowers the grass bag is not going to hold as much it’s larger counterparts, however 8 gallons is a comparable for a mower of this size. 8 gallons allows longer periods of use without needing to empty grass clipping as often.

The grass bag does come with a indicator flap to show you when the grass bag is full, this is a nice handy feature from WORX.

The grass bag on the WORX WG779 is very easy to remove by simply lifting the flap and unhooking and the grass clipping empty from the bag with no obstructions. This is a hard topped collection box with a carry handle at the top.

Practicalities

The light weight ( 29.1lbs) , small size and fold away handles make this mower excellent for smaller lawns or lawns with smaller strips of grass and for storage where space is limited.

This really will make lawn care much easier and really makes the entire experience much less dependent on you struggling with a heavy over sized mower.

As with all cordless lawn mowers, not being tethered by the cord not only makes it easier to mow the lawn, but safer, quieter and more environmentally friendly.

Does this make it more practical the it’s closest  competition? well, yes I think it does for people with smaller lawns and limited space for storage. There is also a very handy and well positioned large central handle that makes carrying the 11 kg  mower to the garage or shed very easy.

Safety Features

What I really like about the WORX WG779 is the addition of a removable safety key that disables the lawnmower to help prevent accidental starting. This is a nice feature not found on similar cordless mowers that gives peace of mind around children. The key has a cord that is attached the handle so making it difficult to loose.

Downsides

1. Adjusting the height is slightly harder than other mowers

I really struggled with this mower to find any downsides. The features are great and all seem to work well for a mower at this price point. The build quality cannot be faulted and it performs as it should.

Now the above may sound trivial and are common to most cordless mowers but should be taken into consideration anyway. They are part of the package and it’s better being aware of them before a purchase than after.

Conclusion

Overall this is a very good mower, I actually rate it higher than the Spear & Jackson 37cm Cordless Rotary Lawnmower due to it’s light weight, portability and fantastic build quality.

The extra features like the removable safety key is a nice touch but one that you most probably never use, besides you want features that will help achieve a lovely looking lawn with least amount of work and effort.

Taking the decision to split the batteries into 2 x 20v was a great idea, especially if you use other WORX cordless tools as they are interchangeable.

The WG779 is very proficient at cutting varying lengths and thickness for such a small and compact cordless mower. It’s worth mentioning that by cutting more regularly and avoiding very long or wet grass this should avoid not putting too much strain on the battery. Remember to always keep the battery charged and in a dry place over winter.

With this mower you’re getting features normally found in high priced mowers, so this is a very reasonable price at around $200.

But do I think it’s better than its closest competitors?

Yes I do!

At this price range this really gives great value for money and you would be very hard pressed to find a cordless mower that performs this well, and has such a good build quality for this price.

Overall I think this is a fantastic mower and I encourage everyone with a yard under 5,500 square feet or less to purchase one. In fact I think it’s the best mower at this level you can get right now!
