Summary
The WORX WR153 is one of a new range of intelligent robotic mowers for large lawns up to up to 1/2 Acre. The WORX WR153 automatically knows what’s best for your lawn every day and adapts to the size and shape of your lawn as well as the growth rate of your grass. It comes supplied with the “Find my Landroid GPS” anti-theft device pre installed.
It has a range of accessories to extend the features that make the WORX WR153 agile, safe, accurate, quiet and perfect for larger lawns. With this model, and the optional accessories, you can build your perfect robotic mower.
Many people assume that for a larger yard they will need a gas lawn mower or at the very least, an electric mower with a long extension cord. This is not the case with this model. Most people simply do not have the time to mow the lawn as often as is necessary but still want that perfect lawn. As we all know regular mowing controls weeds, keeps the lawn neat and healthy and allows for the many benefits of mulching. With the WORX WR153 Landroid Robotic Mower, you can sit back and relax while your robotic lawn mower does all the hard work.
It has the latest technology and through self learning ensures efficient movement and quality of mowing. You will enjoy an amazingly attractive and healthy lawn without having to break a sweat.
Let’s take a closer look at the WORX WR153 robotic lawn mower.

To give you a visual representation of the new WORX WR153 take a look at the video below.
WORX have created robotic lawn mowers that are practically plug and play. Once you have downloaded the app for Android or iPhone for the WORX WR153, simply walk through the lawn area and the machine will work it out from there.
The Landroid navigates by means of the boundary wires in conjunction with the AIA Artificial Intelligence Technology. This allows it to learn as it works in order to mow effectively and efficiently. It will start off rather haphazard, but with little time it will navigate more logically and efficiently.
The AIA technology on the WORX WR153 and on all the new WORX robotic mowers, uses artificial intelligence for greater accuracy and precision. If you have a more complex lawn shape this is a great advantage. It will find its way through narrow gaps and navigate tricky bends and details with ease. It also has a multi-zone programming option for other parts of the yard.
For even trickier yards you can purchase the Off Limits feature as an optional extra.
Power System
The WR153 comes with a decent 20V 4.0 Ah Lithium battery. A great feature of the WORX range is that the battery is interchangeable. You can use the same battery in other WORX yard equipment and even their power tools. This makes the range versatile and convenient while also giving you a cost saving if you purchase WORX products without the battery. The WORX PowerShare feature applies to all WORX 20V cordless tools.
Charging Station
Many robotic lawn mowers have large unsightly charging stations. A feature WORX do really well is the sleek compact charging station. They call it a stealth charging station as it is so discreet. It also has lateral charging contacts so that the Landroid can charge without needing much space, and it has a grid to avoid the grass clippings often seen around charging stations.
Blade
The blade on the WORX WR153 is also well designed and good quality. It consists of three razor-sharp blades connected to a central disk. This spins in both directions. The benefit of this is that it cuts neatly and evenly, but also means the blade sharpness and life span is doubled. Eventually, you will have to sharpen the blades and even replace them but less often than you would normally.
Control Panel & Setup
Setup is fairly straightforward and does not take too long. If you find the instructions provided with the Landroid to be a bit lacking, you can download full instructions as well as a startup guide from the WORX website.
These are the basic steps needed to configure your Landroid:-
• You want to connect the device to your Wi-Fi. There is a QR code under the battery cover to make this easy
• Download the app – See WORX App & Installation below
• Position the charging deck on a flat accessible area near a power outlet
• Use your smartphone and app to “walk” around the lawn area. It will calculate the size and determine the optimal schedule
• Let the Landroid have its first run. Remember it might be a bit clumsy at first but it will improve over time.
Setting up the WORX WR153
Follow the instructions to complete these 7 steps:-
- Locate the charging base – The first step is to position the charging base. Find a flat area that is out of the way, easily accessible and near a power outlet.
- Charge the Landroid
- Run and peg the boundary cable along the perimeter (can also be buried)
- Connect the wires to the base
- Connect the Landroid to your Wi-Fi
- Download the app and create an account
- Walk the lawn with your smartphone using the app to check the area
Firmware updates can be done manually using the USB port or you can allow for automatic over the air updates.
Helpful WORX WR153 Videos
WORX have recently produced two very helpful videos. The first helps with the planning, measuring of your lawn and choosing the correct WORX robotic mower, and the second is an installation guide.
I hope these videos will reassure you how straight forward it is to choose the correct WORX robotic mower and how easy the installation is.

Mowing Features
Cut to Edge
Another feature of the WORX WR153, that many other robotic lawn mowers lack, is the ability to neatly cut to the edge of the lawn. The off-set blades on this Landroid make this possible. Many other models leave a thin edge that will either need to be cut manually of left scruffy. This model leaves a neat perfect edge without any hassle.
Cutting Pattern
When you set up the Landroid the boundary wires will create the mowing area and by walking with your smartphone the system will calculate the mowing area or areas if you use multi-zone programming. As the Landroid has AIA technology which uses artificial intelligence, the mower will constantly learn and improve. Not only will it mow more efficiently but it will also calculate the perfect mowing schedule according to the type of grass and the growth rate. This is all automatic and needs no help from you. It will leave the lawn looking healthy, happy and weed free.
Narrow Passages
Once again, this is an issue that some other robotic lawn mowers battle with. Narrow passages are often a challenge. The same AIA technology combined with the compact design of the WORX WR153 allows it to deal with gaps, paths and narrow passages easily.
Multi-Zone Programming
Most yards and particularly larger yards are likely to have more than one area of lawn. Multi-zone programming allows you to set the Landroid up so that it can deal with this automatically and effectively. Provided it is set up correctly and the boundary wire is in place the WR153 will automatically mow the various zones without you having to manually take it from zone to zone. Again completely hassle and effort free.
Height Adjustment
Depending on the type of grass, the season and weather conditions as well as your personal lawn requirements, you will need to adjust the cutting height from time to time. WORX makes this easy to do on the Landroid as it is quick and simple to adjust. The height can be set from 1.5″ to 3.9″ for a perfect cut.
Mulching
Mulching is always a good idea if your lawn mower can do it. Apart from needing a mulching lawn mower you also need to mow often (can be very time consuming). Fortunately, the Landroid is perfect for this as the grass cuttings are not collected but mulched at all times. Mulching cuts the grass into fine particles which remain on the lawn. These break down to return nutrients to the soil and also make the lawn more water-wise. It will save you on fertilizer costs and protect and nourish the lawn. It is a time saving and eco-friendly way to mow that will make your lawn healthier, greener and envy of your neighbours.
To learn more about the benefits of mulching, see my article The Benefits of Mulching Grass.
Rain Sensor
Many people recommend not mowing in the rain. It can cause damage to the lawn mower as well as the grass. The Landroid has a sensor that will cause it to stop when it rains and then continue mowing once the rain has stopped.
This is, however, not essential. The Landroid WR153 is designed to do short regular cuts and is designed to work safely and efficiently in the rain too, if that is what you want to do. You can adjust the rain sensor so that it continues to mow during rain. This will not harm the grass and will not affect the mower.
WORX App & Installation
You can control your WORX WR153 either using the display panel on the device or using the smartphone app. When you are initially charging the device up, download the app at the same time. It is free and available for iOS as well as Android. Then, sit back and let the machine do its thing.
Updates – while you can do it manually via USB, the firmware is automatically kept up to date with over the air updates.
You can download the respective apps here:
You can even download the app to get a feel for the operation before making a purchase. The app is free. It gives you all the relevant information that you need and complete remote control of the device.
Ensure the Landroid is connected to Wi-Fi and follow the setup instructions after installing the app.
Safety Features
The WORX Landroid WR153 is a powerful machine and also a fair investment. It has a number of safety features that will protect your family as well as your property.
-
Lift & Tilt Sensors
If the mower is tilted or lifted the sensors will ensure the blades stop spinning to protect against accidental contact.
-
Quick-Stop Blade
There is a quick-stop feature that will stop the blades immediately if there are any issues or concerns.
-
PIN & Alarm System
The Landroid will only work with its own network. Added to that is has a PIN code as well as an alarm. This not only protects against accidental or unauthorised use but also protects against theft.
-
Lawn Mower Garage
Whilst your robotic mower is completely fine working in the sun and rain, you do have the option to build or purchase a lawn mower garage. If you are not building one yourself, then there are many different designs and options available. Most robotic mower manufacturers will have a dedicated docking station roof, that will provide some protection from the rain and sun, however you can take it one step further and have a completely bespoke design. To see what can be achieved see my article Top 9 Best Robotic Lawn Mower Garage Ideas.
Accessories
One clever design feature that helps to keep the Landroid prices down is that you don’t pay for unnecessary features. It comes with everything you need for quality mowing but if you want to get more out of your investment, there are some amazing accessories that can be purchased separately.
WORX offers a number of optional extras that for a small additional investment will make your WORX WR153 even more user-friendly, convenient and effective. This is what WORX have for now and they intend to launch even more options in the near future:
-
Voice Control
As much convenience as the automatic and app-controlled device gives you, you can add voice control for even more freedom and ease of use. Perhaps you do not want to look at your phone or you battle to do this. You might just not enjoy the technology. If so, voice control is a great solution. You can operate the majority of the functions effortlessly with just your voice using this option.
It is easy to install, setup and operate.
-
Find My Landroid
Security is always an issue with quality equipment such as the WORX WR153. Although it already features a standard PIN code as well as an alarm, you can get additional protection and peace of mind with the Find My Landroid feature. This feature uses the cellular function of the device to allow you to track it over GPS even without Wi-Fi and RadioLink.
-
Anti-Collision System
Irrespective of your initial setup, some parts of the lawn may be a challenge. Added to this, things change in the yard all the time. The ACS or Anti-Collision System will make your robotic lawn mower more agile and help avoid bumping into trees, branches and other obstacles in the cutting area. It does this by means of quality ultrasonic sensors. This feature allows it to steer easily through the lawn and avoid all obstacles.
-
Off Limits
This add-on feature allows you to create ring-fenced areas. While you can do this with the original boundary wire it can be a bit tricky. This method is a lot more effective and easier to apply. It makes use of a sensor that attaches to the Landroid as well as an additional strip that creates a digital fence on the area you wish the mower to avoid. It can operate independently of the boundary wire and does not need power. It is operated by a magnetic force which the sensor will pick up.
-
RadioLink
While the Wi-Fi connection is great and works well, nothing can match the power of the RadioLink for optimum communication and Artificial Intelligence capabilities. The RadioLink uses low power communication that can travel up to 1km from the router even if there are obstacles in the way.
